- Age Limit: Candidates must be between 18 and 27 years old as of the cutoff date set by the SSC. However, there are exceptions to this rule for candidates from certain reserved categories such as SC/ST, OBC, PwD, and Ex-Servicemen.
- Educational Qualifications:
- Candidates need to have completed their 12th standard or an equivalent examination from a recognized board or university.
- Specifically for the role of Data Entry Operator (DEO) in the office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India, candidates must have passed the 12th standard with Mathematics as one of their subjects.

The Staff Selection Commission administers the Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) examination in three phases: Tier 1, Tier 2, and a Skill Test or Typing Test.- Tier 1: This stage is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) comprising objective-type questions in General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Language. It consists of 100 questions carrying a maximum of 200 marks, to be completed within 60 minutes.
- Tier 2: Also a CBT, but with different patterns for different posts. For Lower Division Clerk/Junior Secretariat Assistant (LDC/JSA), Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant (PA/SA), and Data Entry Operator (DEO) posts, it involves a Descriptive Paper in English/Hindi, worth 100 marks, to be completed within 60 minutes. However, for DEO in the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, it includes a Descriptive Paper in English, worth 100 marks, completed within 60 minutes, and a Typing Test in English.
- Skill Test or Typing Test: This is a qualifying stage conducted for the posts of DEO, LDC, and PA/SA. For DEO, it’s a Skill Test in Data Entry, requiring a minimum typing speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour on a computer. For LDC and PA/SA, it’s a Typing Test, requiring a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi.
- Final Selection: Candidates’ final selection depends on their performance in Tier 1, Tier 2, and the Skill Test or Typing Test, subject to the availability of vacancies. In case of a tie in total marks, preference is given to the candidate with a higher score in Tier 2, then Tier 1, and finally based on the candidate’s older age.
